The hippo habitat at Regional Zoo has a new look following a series of projects focused on water, shade, and comfort. The updates allow the hippos to use their space in ways that match their natural patterns.

A new pool lining and filtration system keep water clear while using energy and resources more efficiently. The design makes it easier for caretakers to manage water depth and temperature as seasons change.

Shade structures and resting platforms give the hippos choices throughout the day. They can warm themselves in the sun, cool off in deep water, or rest in quiet corners near the edge of the pool.

Guests will notice wider paths and additional railings at main viewing points. These changes create more space for families and school groups while keeping sightlines open for visitors of many heights.

The project team also reviewed ways to reduce noise and crowding around the habitat. New planting beds and gentle curves along the path help guide foot traffic and create calmer spaces for watching the animals.

Lessons learned from this work will be shared with partner organizations that care for hippos and other large aquatic mammals. Together, these efforts support strong welfare standards in zoos and aquariums around the world.
